Yes, 星星索, sung by a male singer, was in fact the first time I heard of the song in the late 1960's.

Two thumbs up, Teresa. But this is a song from Tapanuli "Sing Sing So", they sing while rowing the small wooden boat in Lake Toba to the Island of Samosir, in Sumatra Island. Find that place on the map, it's most beautiful place on earth!

這首歌好像也叫做「星星索」,是我很喜歡的一首印尼歌,希望有一天能到印尼,親身體會一下這南國風情。

you are wrong, that name "butet" is another Indonesia song, it means "baby" or "daugter".

I'm stumped! This song sounds indeed like it's the same song as "Butet". Unfortunately, there's now no way I can retrieve that album of Mongolian folk songs to read the fine print and verify if indeed they threw in an Indon song into the album. Until that day arrives, I guess I'll have to concede it has Indon origins. My ancestors are from Xiamen as well. I think people from Fujian have traced a swathe of land South across the Phils, Indon, Malaysia, Sing through the ages.

To kindface: I can see. N, I have seen. I was born in Medan, Indonesia, but my great grandpa and my grandma and their (my) relatives came from China, Xia Men - don't exactly know which part. After a few years staying here, a lot of my relatives wanted to go back, but they didn't actually arrive at their 'jia xiang', but did become a citizen at Hong Kong. They came every year to visit us. During their time here, people interact with the locals. N, The actual song is called 'Butet'.
